Capgras

Description

Entity 12, referred to by wanderers as Capgras, is a humanoid figure resembling a middle-aged woman dressed in tattered clothes and an old winter coat. Having been spotted all across the Backrooms before by wanderers, this entity is most well known for its practice of stalking and attacking anyone it finds isolated or in small groups, often for the purpose of either salvaging equipment and belongings off of its victims or to flay the skin of the deceased's face. Once skinned and removed, Capgras will use the face of its victim to fashion a crude mask by affixing it to a wooden backing.

Upon donning these masks, Capgras' physical appearance is entirely modified to perfectly replicate that of whoever's face the mask is made from, mimicking their looks, voice, and even whatever clothing they were wearing prior to their death. While disguised as a wanderer via these masks, this entity will attempt to disorient and gradually pick off wanderers one by one, often using one of these false identities to infiltrate traveling clusters of people or even entire outposts feigning desperation and requesting aid. The end goal of these efforts is hypothesized to be a means of survival for this entity, scavenging food and equipment from those it attacks and using their identities to continue seeking out and impinging the ranks of more unwitting wanderers.

I led her out there with intentions lost to me now. My motive was lost when I became a stranger to that past self, but I do remember that regardless, I was to act how I would act and do so without hesitation. The poor girl was none the wiser, in fact, I believe I recall her to have utmost trust in me back then. She wouldn't have long to realize it was a mistake.

Biology & Appearance

Those who have managed to survive encounters with Capgras - and see what its true form looks like - have described it as appearing similar to a middle-aged human woman with matted gray hair, cracked and leathery pale skin, and of a narrow, almost bony build. Much of its body is buried beneath several layers of worn-out clothes, topped with a ragged gray winter coat and multiple bulky satchels and bags slung over its shoulders, packed with whatever it has recently salvaged or whatever latest masks it has fashioned from recent victims. The only piece of equipment this entity is known to carry on its person is a long and somewhat rusted skinning knife.

In regards to the entity's face, the few images and witness accounts on hand detail it as being nigh-invisible or possibly even nonexistent, with a dark empty space where its face should be, filled only by two dim eyes and a row of elongated and stained teeth. The explanation for this manifestation or any knowledge of the entity's inner-workings remain entirely unknown.

I recall the exact place I did it, a quaint pond simply called Myrn by the locals. I gazed into the waters of that pond with her for a moment too long for me to find calming. Under the dusk of that night I procured a blade, and absent of my modern care I set to work. To this day I wonder if anyone heard her that night or not.

Behaviors

Witness reports of Capgras describe it as being nigh-sadistic and self-absorbed in nature, even while disguised, often choosing to actively toy with those it attacks when it knows it has the advantage. Those who've managed to fend off this entity claim that it can be easily repelled if it decides the effort of an attempted attack is not worth the payoff, and suggest that any and all weaponry should be used to drive the entity off once discovered. It remains unknown if the entity can be fully killed by any damage done to it.

Discovery

It is not entirely known how long this entity has been preying on wanderers for, but accounts exist suggesting that at least some similar creature - or perhaps the possibility of even multiples of this entity - have been plaguing humans lost in the Backrooms for hundreds of years now, with an account dating back to as early as 1802 describing a "woman with face cloaked in darkness, dressed in tattered furs and cloths and striking under guise of those once thought to be trusted."

I don't remember who that choir of eyes was meant to be, that which decided to pass judgement on me, but its many gazes took one passing glance at the state I had reduced her to, adrift in the Myrn and visage-less, and acted with forces unknown. What was given shall be received, it ruled.

Do's and Don'ts

Do:

  • Stay alert when traveling and keep a close eye on those accompanying you.
  • Remain skeptical of and ideally turn away any lone wanderers you come across.
  • Draw your weapons at the first sign of someone exhibiting bizarre or dangerous behavior.

Don't:

  • Let your guard down.
  • Brush off uncharacteristic actions.
  • Travel unarmed or alone.

It was not long after my ostracization from that Isle that I noticed my earthliness had faded, Chronos' grasp lost on me. It was then I realized what that mass of watchfulness had afflicted me with, a likeness to the horrors about me, a revocation of humanity. Soon thereafter I had an epiphany, one that would fuel me forevermore.

What was lost can be reclaimed.
