Entity 78 - “The Twin Stars”
This document details the comprehensive research findings regarding two previously unclassified cosmic anomalies within Level 78, initially catalogued as celestial phenomena but subsequently reclassified as sentient godlike entities. The subjects, designated Entity 78-A (“Ceres”) and Entity 78-B (“Nebula”), represent a paradigm shift in our understanding of astronomical bodies within The Backrooms’ cosmological framework. Their discovery has necessitated a complete reevaluation of our classification systems for both entities and cosmic phenomena.
HABITAT(S): Habitat
Entity 78 collectively refers to two distinct, yet intrinsically linked, sentient beings that primarily reside within the vacuum of Level 78, having been documented for approximately 3.4 standard years following the “Ad Astra” event. Initial long-range observation cataloged these entities as non-anomalous celestial phenomena, consistent with the unique cosmology of the level. E-78-A was first identified as a main-sequence star of indeterminate class, notable for its faint pinkish hue and erratic luminosity patterns. E-78-B was classified as a diffuse/emission nebula, characterized by its vibrant, swirling clouds of interstellar gas and dust that displayed an unusual degree of structural cohesion and rapid morphological change. For months, they were studied under the assumption that they were simply features of Level 78's starfield.
This classification was revised on ██/██/202█ during an event referred to as Incident 78-Delta. Research Team Gamma-7, while monitoring E-78-A during a period of unusual solar flare activity, documented the “star” and “nebula” converging at a velocity previously thought impossible. Upon reaching proximity, the celestial phenomena dissipated in a brilliant flash of non-Euclidean light. Researches observed the star's plasma emissions coalesce into a humanoid form approximately 1.8 kilometers in height. Simultaneously, E-78-B underwent rapid condensation, forming an identical humanoid structure composed of interstellar gas and dust particles. Both entities maintained these forms for precisely 47 minutes before reverting to their celestial states. Subsequent observations have confirmed that these humanoid forms are the true nature of Entity 78, with their celestial appearances serving as either a form of camouflage, a projection, or an alternate state of being.
Description
For the greater part of recorded observation in Level 78, two dominant celestial signatures were cataloged as inert astrophysical objects: a high-luminosity point source exhibiting quasi-periodic variability (designated L78-CER-Σ1; hereafter “White-Ash Star”), and a fan-shaped emission nebula with braided filaments and discrete knots of ionization (designated L78-NEB-Δ1; hereafter “Roselight Veil”). Both targets were originally filed as non-anomalous within the context of Level 78’s already unphysical star fields. Power loss during a solar storm forced an overhaul of legacy data stores. Reprocessing of the pre-event photometry and reconstitution of timing solutions revealed two anomalies:
- L78-CER-Σ1’s variability harmonics encode repeating key-sigils consistent with Hub door-glyphs.
- L78-NEB-Δ1’s filament topology rearranges between observation sessions to reproduce the same sigil set at grander scales, as if “wiring” the sky with a mobile runic lattice.
The two manifestations are consistently as follows:
Ceres
Artistic rendition of Ceres.
When in humanoid form, Ceres presents as an exceptionally pale-skinned, feminine humanoid figure devoid of any blemishes. The irises of her eyes are ash-grey in color, containing stark white vertically slitted pupils. Long strands of what could only be described as “hair” cascade around the entity, though closer analysis revealed these strands to be composed of light-pink plasma interwoven with numerous sub-millimetric gravitational wells that consume ambient particulates on contact. Cosmetic accents include mascara, black-painted lips, and earrings fashioned from small, antique-style keys. Attire trends consistently toward black fabrics and chains evocative of rebellious adolescent subcultures in The Frontrooms such as the “Goth” and “Emo” movements.
Nebula
Artistic rendition of Nebula.
Like her sister, Nebula presents as a pale feminine humanoid whose epidermis carries living, slow-swirling markings of ionized gas, dust, and starlets that advect across her frame with organized flow; the pattern is homologous to the filamentary architecture of the nebula that masked her. The coloration and behavior of these markings are strikingly similar to those observed on Entity 700. Her features are soft, with full lips, a timid gaze, and a poised posture.
Unlike her sister, Nebula's demeanor and attire are markedly more formal and composed, though a precise description of her clothing is difficult as it appears to be woven from the same cosmic matter that constitutes her markings, and thus remains ever-shifting.
Both beings can resume their sky-forms abruptly. The transition impacts the entire observable starfield; stars “snap” to new coordinates along very short baseline vectors. The celestial forms are now understood to be elaborate projections rather than their true forms. Ceres’ stellar form radiates energy signatures identical to a class G star but with abnormal quantum fluctuations in the 10^17 Hz range. Nebula's nebular form contains molecular structures that defy standard astrophysical models, with gas densities varying from 10 to 10,000 particles per cubic centimeter in mathematically impossible patterns.
Biology
The biological composition of Entities 78-A and 78-B defies conventional understanding of both organic and inorganic matter. Extensive spectroscopic analysis has revealed that both entities exist in a state of controlled quantum flux, simultaneously maintaining solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma states within their forms. This multi-phasic existence appears to be consciously regulated, suggesting a level of bodily control that surpasses any known entity within The Backrooms.
Entity 78-A’s core temperature readings are paradoxical - her pale white skin registers temperatures of approximately 3.7 Kelvin, consistent with the cosmic microwave background radiation rather than biological norms. . The miniature black holes interwoven throughout her hair-like appendages appear to be stable singularities, each maintaining its own event horizon while somehow not consuming the surrounding matter of the entity herself. Tissue samples obtained during a brief materialization event (through automated drone collection) revealed cellular structures composed of degenerate matter typically found in white dwarf stars, with atomic nuclei compressed into crystalline patterns that should require neutron-star level gravity to maintain. Her ash-colored irises contain photoreceptors capable of detecting the entire electromagnetic spectrum, while her white slitted pupils appear to function as miniature gravitational lenses. The most remarkable feature remains her hair, which contains numerous miniature black holes ranging from Planck-scale to approximately 2.3 millimeters in diameter. These singularities maintain stable orbits within her hair strands, occasionally emitting Hawking radiation that she appears to metabolize. Most disturbing is the detection of what appears to be a secondary core within the entity's chest cavity - a structure that bears remarkable similarity to those observed in Entity 700 (Solaris).
Nebula’s biological composition presents equally extraordinary properties. Her humanoid form consists of what appears to be a containment field maintaining a human-shaped region of interstellar medium. The moving markings across her body represent actual galactic currents and cosmic weather patterns occurring in real-time within her form. The swirling patterns across her skin are not merely aesthetic; thermal imaging reveals these to be channels of superheated plasma flowing through predetermined pathways, similar to a circulatory system but operating at stellar temperatures. These channels converge at seven distinct points throughout her form, creating what could be described as “stellar chakras”. Analysis indicates she contains approximately 1.4 solar masses of material primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and complex organic molecules typically found in nebulae. Her physical form maintains structural integrity through unknown means, with internal pressures that should immediately dissipate into vacuum yet remain perfectly contained. When in humanoid form, Nebula can manipulate the density and composition of her internal medium, occasionally releasing gas clouds that form temporary atmospheric environments around her.
Both entities demonstrate complete immunity to conventional physical laws when transitioning between forms. The transformation process involves a rapid quantum state change rather than physical rearrangement, with their entire mass momentarily existing in superposition before collapsing into either celestial or humanoid configuration. Energy readings during transformation show complete absence of energy transfer, suggesting they may access extradimensional energy sources or exist partially outside conventional spacetime.During these transformations, local instruments detect massive gravitational waves and temporal distortions, suggesting that the entities exist partially outside our conventional spacetime continuum. The energy expenditure for such transformations has been calculated to exceed the total output of a Type II civilization, yet the entities perform these shifts with apparent ease.
Their apparent teenage humanoid forms show no signs of aging or cellular decay, with biological markers indicating either perfect stasis or complete absence of metabolic processes. DNA analysis (from shed hair samples) reveals non-terrestrial genetic structures incorporating elements not found in Mendeleev's periodic table, with base pairs arranged in fractal patterns that change when observed.
Ceres and Nebula exhibit general exemptions to human needs (respiration, nutrition, typical metabolic maintenance) and abilities reminiscent of those displayed by Entity 700 and The Keymaster.
Behavior
The behavioral patterns of Entity 78 display striking contrasts that belie their twin relationship, with observed interactions suggesting complex familial dynamics.
Entity 78-A (Ceres) exhibits what can only be described as adolescent rebelliousness, seeming to have the mentality of a teenager despite her apparent cosmic age. She has been observed creating deliberate gravitational distortions near M.E.G. observation posts, seemingly for her own amusement. On seventeen documented occasions, she has spelled out messages in stellar formations visible through Level 78's portholes, including “STOP WATCHING ME”, “UGH”, and “DADDY SAYS UR ANNOYING”. These communications suggest awareness of our surveillance and a casual disregard for our research protocols. The entity's destructive capabilities have been witnessed during what appear to be emotional outbursts. Monitoring through long-range sensors has captured numerous instances of her emitting high-energy plasma bursts equivalent to Class X solar flares when frustrated, often accompanied by gravitational micro-fluctuations that disrupt nearby equipment. She has been observed purposefully altering her orbit to avoid M.E.G. observation teams, and on three separate occasions redirected space debris toward monitoring stations in what appeared to be deliberate harassment. Audio equipment detected what could only be described as frustrated screaming across multiple electromagnetic spectra during this event.
Entity 78-B (Nebula), in contrast, displays behavior suggesting diplomatic inclinations and curiosity toward observers. She has been documented approaching Level 78's space station on multiple occasions, maintaining a respectful distance while appearing to study the station with nearly the same intensity that we study her. Unlike her counterpart, Entity 78-B’s communications have been more formal and structured. Nebula has been documented creating intricate patterns within her nebular form — stellar arrangements that form complex geometric shapes, mathematical equations and philosophical queries in key-glyph language, rendered in glowing gas clouds — possibly as a form of meditation or communication attempt. She typically positions herself between Ceres and the space station, acting as a buffer during her sister's outbursts. When in humanoid form, she often faces toward the section of Level 78 where Solaris is most frequently observed, maintaining what field researchers have termed a “vigilant posture” for hours at a time.
During joint observations, the entities demonstrate a clear sibling dynamic. Ceres often attempts to provoke reactions from Nebula through increasingly elaborate displays of cosmic manipulation - including the creation and destruction of temporary star systems solely for dramatic effect. Nebula responds with what can only be interpreted as patient exasperation, occasionally restraining her sibling through the deployment of controlled gravitational fields that gently redirect Ceres' more destructive impulses.
Both entities have shown protective behavior toward each other that borders on the extreme. When Research Team Delta attempted to isolate and study Nebula using a modified containment field generator (a catastrophically naive endeavor in retrospect), Ceres’ reaction was immediate and overwhelming. She materialized within milliseconds, her form expanding to dwarf entire star systems as she systematically dismantled our equipment atom by atom. The only reason Level 78 itself wasn't destroyed was Nebula's intervention, suggesting she holds some regard for human life despite our transgression.
Entity 78's daily cycles appear tied to Entity 700's movements through the level. When Solaris enters her active state, both twins move into closer orbital proximity, with Nebula's gas clouds becoming more vibrant and structured while Ceres's stellar activity decreases noticeably. During Solaris's destructive phases, both entities retreat to the farthest observable reaches of the celestial projection, with Ceres often dimming to near-invisibility while Nebula's clouds contract into protective shells around her sister. This behavior suggests either a desire to avoid Solaris's destructive impulses or possibly a protective instinct from the latter being, though Solaris has never been observed directly interacting with them during these periods.
The entities' behavior toward M.E.G. personnel has evolved from indifference to active avoidance following our attempted communications with Solaris and The Keymaster regarding them (see below). Both entities maintain greater distances, and Ceres in particular has taken to projecting holographic images of warning symbols — universal "keep away" signage and, disturbingly, accurate depictions of the fates of researchers who died during earlier Level 78 expeditions.
Relations
Following the discovery of their true nature, given the remarkable similarity in abilities to documented entities The Keymaster (Entity X) and Solaris (Entity 700), Directive Command authorized contact attempts with both entities regarding the nature and origin of Ceres and Nebula.
The Keymaster
On ██/██/202█, a team led by Researcher J. Corvus encountered The Keymaster in The Hub. When questioned about potential relations to the celestial entities, The Keymaster's typically neutral demeanor shifted dramatically. He made vague threats, asking hypothetical questions about what it would feel like to be trapped in a “windowless, doorless, lightless, 5-square-foot room”, before demanding that the matter be looked into no further and then disappearing.
Solaris
Contact with Solaris proved even more concerning. During her active state on ██/██/202█, Dr. E. Vance attempted to approach Solaris as she was seemingly observing Ceres. Before any questions could be verbalized, Solaris’ head rotated 180 degrees while her body remained stationary, her glowing purple eyes intensifying to nearly blinding levels. The miniature black hole above her head expanded momentarily, creating gravitational anomalies that nearly compromised the team's magnetic boots. Her response, transmitted directly to the team's neural interfaces rather than through audible speech, stated: “They are under my protection. Your curiosity will become your extinction if you pursue this further. Leave. Now.” Temperature readings dropped to near absolute zero for precisely 3.7 seconds following this exchange.
These defensive and overtly hostile responses have raised significant concerns about the true nature and potential threat level of these entities.
