Nunca-and-Philia

Do you remember, Nunca? The day you were found. You were an orphan, huddled against the wall, crying from your solitude. Dandizette discovered you and summoned me, being inexperienced in calming children. I comforted you, grew you a rose which you held in your palms as the tears continued to flow down your cheeks.

We brought you to a calmer place, a field. Dandy took the shape of a tiny squid to comfort you; after all, you had come from a fishing village. You lifted your palms to offer the rose which I had given you. You found, then, resting gently in its center, a pearl fresh from the sea, perfectly round, bright and pure. It was then that Dandy embraced you, making you their champion — their child.

Truth be told, at the time, I could hardly fathom what it meant to adopt mortal as a champion, or to care for them as a parent would care for a child. As Dandy became increasingly fond of you, I too grew a soft spot for you over time and loved you dearly. You used to cling to my leg and run on the soft grass. You used to smile so brightly and bring me flowers. Nunca… My sweet Nunca…

You were always so cheerful and joyous. Dandy taught you everything like a parent would. I watched over you, helping to raise you as well. You started having many hopes and dreams, many wishes and expectations… The more you grew, the more our love towards you grew as well, and the closer we became.

I stood and watched as you performed for the first time, ensure the magic behind you would illuminate you and captivate an audience. I made sure your colorful clothes were always ready to be donned for your performance as you traveled all throughout the realms…

I was like a mother to you, and you were like my son. I stood and watched as you grew, helped you forward from behind the scenes…

Many centuries had passed since you became Dandy's champion, and you had grown into a fearsome, yet respectable and trustworthy being. You spread laughter through villages and realms, bringing smiles to the faces of all beings young and old. In spite of your misleading appearance, you gained respect with your skillful and unpredictable strategies. I still remember the day you defeated an opponent with a boot and a snake!

And you would proudly show off your skills, speaking of the mystical things you could do, of all the great hopes and dreams you had. And I stood and watched with a smile. He went out on his own, he brought us gifts and treats, and would always wish to stay by our side.

And I remained where I needed to be, observing the course of our peaceful existence without being too much of an interference…

And you grew, and grew, little by little. We marked how tall you got every few months on the tree nearby the village. The lines started so low… And then…

Then the lines were cursed to stop halfway through.

And I stood and watched as it happened.

It all happened so quick. The Iron Fist launched an assault on our temple. Amidst the chaos, I scrambled to get all the worshipers to safety, only to find myself cornered by one of the Fist's soldiers. He poised to strike me with his iron weapon, but then…

The next thing I knew, you lay on the ground before me, your chest lodged with the arrowhead that had been meant for me. You had jumped in front of me to save my life in sacrifice of your own. I knelt down to cradle you, to tend to your wounds, but it was ready far too late. The poisonous effects of the iron had already coursed through you. I watched as the light faded from your eyes, as your body fell limp in my arms.

With the help of the others, you were buried alongside the rest of our fallen companions within the pantheon. And I remained still as your small body was buried underneath the soil.

The road ahead is harsh and cold like a stormy winter, but everyone knows that after the harsh winter, there is spring and the sun shining up in the sky. Even if it takes a long time, if we walk together, the cold weather won't be as hard to handle.

The first flowers of spring are already blooming, Nunca.

…I miss you…
