Object 12, also known as "Liquid pain", is a highly toxic corrosive substance found in many levels of the Backrooms. It is extremely dangerous to wanderers, and thus it is advised to avoid this substance when possible — only handling it with proper equipment while under the supervision of an M.E.G. operative.

Description

LiquidPain

A sample of Liquid Pain undergoing testing.

Liquid Pain is a viscous, crimson-colored fluid with a similar smell and density to Almond Water. Similarly to the latter, it may be found in nondescript canisters of unknown origin, which are seemingly placed inconspicuously throughout The Backrooms — almost as if with the objective to deceive wanderers into consuming the substance. Interestingly, analyses of Almond Water samples have detected very minute traces of Liquid Pain, suggesting some form of relation between the two substances. The true nature/extent of this relation is unknown, however.

Liquid Pain evaporates at a temperature of 70ºC (158ºF), resulting in a substance known as Vaporous Pain which is equally if not more toxic than its liquid state. Inhalation of Vaporous Pain may result in: irritation of the eyes, vision loss, respiratory distress, and infection of mucosa.

When exposed to oxygen for a prolonged period of time, Liquid Pain will undergo a transformation in properties, coagulating and thickening until resulting in a darkened resin known as Crystalized Pain. While it presents no immediate danger, it is extremely volatile, with a tendency to spontaneously rupture and combust. As such, some have weaponized Crystalized Pain as an explosive.

Symptoms and Effects

Exposure to Liquid Pain results in a series of successively worsening symptoms, varying in severity and rapidity depending on the amount one is exposed to. The symptoms are consecutively as follows:

  • Burning/tingling sensation at point of contact
  • Intense irritation of the epidermis
  • Gradual rise in internal body temperature
  • Intense stabbing pain within the stomach, resulting from acidic corrosion of stomach lining and intestines
  • Further stabbing pain spread throughout the entire body
  • Boiling of blood
  • Rupture of veins/arteries, internal bleeding
  • Spontaneous combustion (on rare occasions)
  • Death

If one is treated with enough Almond Water before the appearance of the fifth symptom, their likelihood of survival will significantly increase, with most if not all symptoms being cured in a matter of hours. If successful, all damage will gradually heal and reverse itself. However, if one does not receive treatment before the fifth symptom occurs, they are to be considered past the point of no return and quarantined for the safety of others.

Locations

Liquid Pain is present in numerous levels of The Backrooms. It has been found to naturally occur in small bodies, such as puddles and pools typically no larger than five feet in diameter. Otherwise, it may be found in containers such as metal thermoses.

Origins

The origins of Liquid Pain are nigh-unknown, but the earliest known reference to them appears to date back to the height of The Lost. In one of their myths, they refer to this substance as the "ichor of war", claiming it came down to them in a cataclysmic monsoon which devastated many of their people. This mythological event is claimed to have been a prominent factor in the decline of The Lost.
